NATURE OF NEGOTIATION
For most people, negotiation and bargaining mean the samething; however,there is a big difference between them. We will use the term bargaining to describe the competition, win-lose situation and use the term negotiation to refer to the win-win situation such as those that occur when parties are trying to find a mutual acceptable solution to a complex conflict. Negotiation is very complex social process; many of the most important factors that shape negotiation result do not occur during negotiation;yhey occur before the parties start to negotiate, or shape the context around the negotiation.
People negotiate for several reasons;
To agree on how to share or divide a limited resource such as lands, properties, or time.
To create something new that neither party could do on his or her own.
To resolve a problem or dispute between parties.
People negotiate all the time. Negotiation is not a process reserved only for the skilled diplomat, top salesman, ardent advocate, top police man,nations,or busineses.Sometimes people fail to negotiate because they do not recognise the they are in a negotiation situation. By choosing option other than negotiation, they may fail to achieve their goal, get what they need or manage their problems smoothly as they might like to. People may also recognize the need for negotiation but do poorly because they misunderstood the process and do not have a good negotiating skills
From the foregoing, negotiation in it simplest term can be refers to a discussion between two or more disputant who are trying to work out a solution to their problem. This interpersonal or inter-group process can occur at a personal level, as well as at a corporate level or international (diplomatic) level. Negotiation typically take place because the parties wish to create something new that neither could do on his or her own or to resolve a problem or dispute between them.Lastly,the importance of negotiation cannot be overemphazised,because through negotiation many disturbing conflicts have been resolved.
